So many have been asking where to find our Spanish Pies, we thought we’d make a quick post to let everybody know that we’re still here!
Our pies became so popular so quickly that we outgrew our current facilities. We are in the process of setting up a new facility and will resume our regular delivery schedule as soon as we possibly can.
In the meantime, call us if you have any questions. It’s wonderful to be missed, and we don’t want you to wait too long before your next taste of Spanish Pie empanadas!
We’re glad that so many people love our food. We are always very happy to feed you!
¡Buen provecho!

Writer Marlene Parrish covers Spanish Pie empanadas in the Fresh Find feature of today’s Post-Gazette. The article is called “Ooh, Spanish pies to savor available here” and mentions several ways to “Try Spanish Pie”:
Asylum Coffee Bar, 1919 Forbes Ave., in Uptown.
Espresso A Mano, 3623 Butler St., in Lawrenceville.

Asylum Coffee Bar boasts that its coffee is so smooth that it tastes just as good when it cools, and that’s the truth! We had a great time this morning and it looks like Asylum is off to a great start.
Chef Daniel talking to Matt Hoover and some patrons at the opening of Asylum Coffee Bar
Today is the grand opening of Asylum Coffee Bar (1919 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219), a wonderful new place to “Try Spanish Pie!” Here is a message from Matt Hoover, the co-founder and general manager:
RiverCity Java LLC is excited to announce the opening of Asylum Coffee Bar! Join us on Saturday, October 10, 2009 when we open the doors for the very first time at 9am!
Asylum Coffee Bar’s menu has something for all, featuring 14 unique specialty lattes & mochas, our custom Asylum Blend coffee, and a vast selection of single-origin coffees from around the world provided by the fantastic Iron Star Roasting Company, owners of your local Coffee Tree Roasters coffeehouse. If beans aren’t your thing, warm up with some Harney & Sons tea, Ghirardelli hot chocolate, or Mountain Cider Company apple cider – or stay cool with a fat-free, Vitamin-C infused green tea fruit smoothie…
We’ve also reached an agreement to offer a great lunch & dinner selection – Spanish Pies! Daniel Aguera, another Pittsburgh-based (born in Spain) chef has a fantastic selection of empanadas that we will be featuring daily – until they sell out!
We look forward to seeing a crowd!
| This is the most traditional version, stuffed with albacore tuna. For zest, we add a few chopped manzanilla olives with pimento and capers. |
Beef
Local, grass-fed beef is chopped and stewed with a handful of vegetables. Chef combines American steak seasonings with traditional Spanish seasonings for just the right flavor. Fans call it “Pot Roast Pie.” |
Chorizo
This pie gets its flavor from locally made Spanish-style chorizo from Parma Sausage in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. Chef takes care to cook and drain the sausage so that the filling is not too oily, and adds a few diced potatoes to temper the heat of the chorizo spices. |
Local Vegetable
This savory vegetable pie is stuffed with a variety of local vegetables, usually including zucchini, summer squash, and onions. This is a Vegan pie–no eggs, no milk, no honey, no meat. |
Chicken with Spinach
This mild filling is a favorite with kids. |
Apple Cheddar
Apple cheddar makes an excellent meal any time, but we particularly like it for breakfast! Sweet-tart Granny Smith apples, sharp cheddar, and a touch of honey. |
